I randomly got recommended this song recently and it just sounds so wholesome! At least, from what I understand of the lyrics. Guess I figured I’d write out a proper translation to make sure I’m understanding it right.
Due to a rare turn of events, I actually have some free time these days, so why not? And I even have a translation website (the one you are reading now) set up and ready to go!
Caveat on that: I set this website up over 5 years ago, in 2020. I completely forgot I had done this, but turns out I made a kind-of involved website generation procedure, including my own custom preprocessor.
Lyrics are written in a custom markdown-like file format I made, which then sends generated data into Jekyll, which then generates the site. Here is the link to the source code if you’re interested.
Thankfully it looks like GitHub pages automatically handles the Jekyll part, so I just gotta run the preprocessor and hope nothing has broken in 5 years. I also don’t exactly remember what my file format supports exactly, but we’ll see. Maybe I’ll even end up giving it more functionality, who knows?
The main thing is the content itself though, and if you’re reading this, it must have all at least sorta worked :)
Update: contrary to my fears, I was able to get everything working perfectly pretty seamlessly, and I even improved the preprocessor a bit. Not bad going, me from the past! Especially for something I self-proclaimed would be “bad”.
I guess it's because my scripts had very few dependencies (in fact the preprocessor only uses standard Python libraries), so less likelihood of something going wrong.
Some technical notes
Also, quick note on just how much the world has changed since my last update to this site. Back in 2020, LLMs were still nacent, and there was still plenty of room for human-crafted translations and all hopes and dreams and whatever else that went into it. This site has always been something that’s just for fun for me though, and that hasn’t changed. It helps me personally learn a lot, and I just feel like I properly understand songs much better by translating it by hand. So I’m not in the slightest dissuaded by LLMs in continuing this site, nor indeed by if there are other translations out there already. I could use these other sources to double-check my work and help me get better!
Though I must say, this song happens to be one which doesn’t seem to have English translations readily available online, which does give me a bit more motivation~.
